She moved to Burwood in Sydney in 1939 where she married Gordon on 22 Apr 1939, in the church next door to where they were to live their married lives together at Flat 5/50 Belmore Street, Burwood. She worked for AMP Insurance as a rep and walked miles and miles selling insurance. She also worked at Murray's Department Store and Mansour's manchester store where she worked as a pay clerk and switchboard operator, arranging the curtain hanging appointments until she retired when she was 79. She knew Eugene & John Mansour personally, and had often gone to their homes for dinner. Mansour's valued her so highly that she was asked to go back to work after she retired to relieve on the switchboard when their new operator was away on holidays. She refused as her health was failing. She suffered from bad circulation and angina and could not walk very far without becoming exhausted, even though Mansour's was only around the corner in Burwood Road from where she lived. Nellie had a great sense of humour and the week before she passed away she informed her family not to publish her real age in the newspapers as she had lied about her age when she started her job. Nellie passed away on 25th May 1988, after getting a terrible bout of the flu. Her husband, Gordon, had passed away 20 years earlier on 15th June, 1968, from a massive heart attack. They never had children of their own but loved all their nieces and nephews dearly and were always very generous with birthday and Christmas gifts. She was like a mother to her niece Joan, whom she helped to raise as a young child, due to her sister Lucy contracting Parkinson's Disease. Nellie had a wicked sense of humour and easily fitted in anywhere.
