Notes
a. Note:   -------------------------
  Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915
  Name: Elen Gilligan
 Baptism Age: 0
 Event Type: Baptism
 Birth Date: 1816
 Baptism Date: 21 Jul 1816
Baptism Place: St James', Dublin city, Dublin, Ireland
Parish Variants: James' St., St. James, James's Street
 Diocese: Dublin
 Father: Peter Gilligan
 Mother: Mary Gilligan
 -----------------------
Ellen Gilligan was born in 1816 in Kildare, Ireland, her parents were Peter Gilligan & Mary Birmingham.
Ellen migrated to Australia with her mother, Mary, in 1827 as part of the "free women and children" on board the vessel "Brothers". Ellen's father, Peter, was already in New South Wales as he was transported in 1818 for stealing potatoes.
Ellen appears on the 1828 New South Wales Australian Census along with her father Peter, and her mother Mary She is aged 11 at the time.
Ellen "married" John Delaney (no record with NSW BDM) about 1830 and they were to have 13 children.
Information taken from Ellen's death certificate has her living at Ellen Vale, Fish River, near Bathurst. There is no record of Ellen Vale as a town so perhaps this was a property. The Fish River runs very close to O'Connell, about 30 mins drive from Bathurst.
Other information has her as the wife of John Delaney a farmer and grazier, they were married at Windsor New South Wales and she was aged "between 18 & 19".
Ellen had her first baby in 1834 (which sadly died) and then went on to have 12 more over 24 years.
The certificate also confirms her parents as Peter Gilligan a farmer and Mary Birmingham, and that she was born in Kildare, Ireland and she had been in the colony for 31 years.
Ellen died at home on 24th January, 1858, and the cause of death is "natural labour haemorage". She was aged 43 years. The Medical Attendant was Dr. John Eaton on the day of her death. Her young baby was by now 1 month old. She was survived by 11 of her children, the youngest being Ellen Edith 1 month, the birth that caused her death.
Ellen was buried 25th January, 1858, at Ellen Vale, and the Undertaker was William Pettit from Fish River.
Interestingly where the certificate asks for the Minister and Religion the word "none" is written with only the names of the Witnesses - Jeremiah Grant and Andrew Flanagan. John Delaney went on to marry Mary Grant in 1863.
Saturday 30th January, 1858, Ellen's husband John placed a Death Notice in the Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal:
On the 24th inst., at her residence, Ellen Vale
Fish River, Bathurst, Ellen, the beloved wife of
John Delaney, leaving a large family and a
numerous circle of friends to lament her loss.
Ellen's grave is still there today on a private property at Fish River.
