Thomas Watson worked as a carrier for Mr. Thompson of Camden. About 4pm on 3 Apr 1865, Mr. Thompson and Thomas were driving bullock wagons laden with hay through Macquarie Street, Liverpool, which was a dirt track back in those days. Thomas was in charge of the second team. Thomas had been working the night before and was feeling rather fatigued so rather than walk beside his wagon he chose to ride on the shaft. He met with an unfortunate demise when he fell from the shaft landing in such a manner that the wheels of the wagon ran over his thighs just above the knees inflicting serious crushing injuries and severing the artery and he bled to death. Doctors Nind and Smith were quickly on the scene but were unable to save his life. Many of the men back in those days had similar unfortunate occurrences.
