Jim Keating was born in 1902 in Coonamble. He met Melba Wilson and they were engaged for 17 years before they eventually married.
Jim worked also for Wright Heaton's along with Melba where he drove delivery trucks and at Charley Clouns and pencilled at races for Tom O'Brien. He also did gardening for various Doctor's around Rose Bay which is an upper class suburb of Sydney. He loved flowers and he and Melba had a small but beautiful garden where they lived at 12 Niblick Street, North Bondi. He especially loved to grow giant dahlias in large round plots in the centre of his front lawn. Jim also built a greenhouse in his backyard to grow his orchids both miniature and normal sizes.
He was a member of the Bondi Icebergs and swam most mornings at Bondi Beach both in summer and in winter. He loved to take his visitors on tours around the Kings Cross area of Sydney and in particular the El Alamein Fountain. It was a family joke that he was a terrible driver and to put fuel to fire he enjoyed scaring his passengers by revving the accelerator of the car! It was common practice to also drive around Kings Cross for hours searching for "Peter's" brand icecream for Melba as she wouldn't eat any other brand!
Jim and Melba didn't have any children but loved their budgies like they were their own offspring. Every bird they had was named "Joe". They had about three birds over the years and they were all taught to talk and swear in Jim's voice!
Jim passed away on 16 Jun 1989 after a two and a half year stay in a nursing home in Waverly. He died of a cerebral haemorrhage.
