Notes
a. Note:   -------------------------
Mary Ellen Farrell may not be a "notable Australian" but we her descendants look upon her with pride. Mary Ellen was present during a lot of Australian heritage; the Gold Rush, the bushrangers, First World War, Depression and Second World War. Through all this she did not for once put down her guns.
Mary Ellen Farrell (nee Gilligan) was born at Frogmore around the Nepean district of Sydney, New South Wales. Descendants of the Gilligan family are from Sligo, Ireland. The Gilligan family crest was "WORK CROWNS THE END".
Sometime during 1888 both the Gilligan family and the Farrell family (close neighbours of the Gilligans) decided to go north west of New South Wales by bullock team to Coonamble. The Gilligans purchased a property about 16 miles from the township but sold this later and bought "Woodside", 14 miles from the township, and a smaller holding called "Lyola". All the Gilligans were educated by a governess as they lived too far out of town to go to school.
A little later on in life Mary Ellen married Francis Farrell, the eldest living Farrell boy and they came to live at "Lyola". Seven children were born to Francis and Mary Ellen while living at "Lyola" and by this time Mary Ellen wanted to move into the township to educate her children. The Brigidine nuns had arrived at Coonamble by this time and taught the children. Mary Ellen's father-in-law William, had a spacious home built for her in Wingadee Street in West Coonamble, and bought a carrying business for his son Francis that served the whole district. Five more children were born here bringing the total to twelve, six boys and six girls. Mary Ellen was unique in never having spent one day in hospital all her 82 years of life. All her children were delivered by a midwife and doctor at the home. Mary Ellen was respected and loved by all the Coonambleites for her "great motherhood" and also known throughout the district for her charity to all the passerby swaggies. Their tucker bags were always filled with food of some kind to help them on their wanderings. She gave homes to two unemployed nephews whose parents had left the district during the Depression years and reared four children whose mother became a helpless invalid very early in her married life.
Francis predeceased her by many years and when her daughter Brigid married Kenneth Bowman they came to live with Mary Ellen at "Avoca". Kenneth obtained a position on the railway in Sydney and so Mary Ellen came to live with them at Westmead, Sydney, where she lived until her death in September 1952 of a cerebral haemorrhage. Mary Ellen Farrell has certainly lived up to her family crest in every possible way: "WORK CROWNS THE END".

Mary Ellen opened her home to her family in times of need. Her brother Peter lived with her in Coonamble due to his work commitment with her husband Francis. Peter's wife resided in Sydney. Mary Ellen also took on the responsibility of helping to raise her son Bill's children, Betty and Pat, as well as her own children, due to their mother contracting Parkinson's Disease. She shared this responsibility with their other grandmother Ruth Wilson.
