Note: ------------------------ Nepean Times (Penrith, NSW: 1882 - 1962), Saturday 30 April 1898, page 4 Obituary DEATH OF MRS. JOHN GUNNELL On Friday of last week there passed away, at her residence, Cranebrook, the wife of John Gunnell aged 54, after a brief illness of a little over a fortnight. Apparently a slight illness came on, which caused retching, and which the relatives thought was a billious attack. Dr Shand was called in, and at first thought there was inflammation of the liver only, but, after the first visit he discovered there was a deep-seated tumour The deceased lady got better and worse at intervals, and all thought her illness was but of short duration There was apparently no cause for alarm until the Thursday before she died, when she suffered a good deal of pain at times, and the expectorations were more frequent and discolored. On Friday morning there were most pronounced symptoms of something serious having happened, apparently the tumour had bursted. Dr Shand was at once sent for, and he came with all speed. All the relatives were summoned, and the doctor did all that was possible to prolong life, but of no avail, and the deceased passed peacefully away about noon. Deceased, as before stated, was 54 years of age, and was the daughter of the late Mr Richard Stapleton, of Frogmore. She was a native of the District, and had resided here all her life. She was married 32 years ago, and has four children - three girls and one boy all of whom are now women and man, Mr James Gunnell being the youngest of the family. The eldest daughter is married to Mr John Stapleton of Mudgee, the rest of the family residing at home with their father. Deceased was highly respected throughout the district and will be sadly missed. The funeral on Sunday last was attended by a large concourse of people, many coming from long distances. Her remains were interred in Cranebrook Roman Catholic cemetery, Rev J Sheridan, P.P., conducting the service. Mrs J Price (through her manager, Mr W Fragar), had charge of the funeral arrangements.
