COONAMBLE, Wednesday. A large amount of interest was taken in the land ballot tor 12 settlement leases, the town being full of visitors. On this occasion the board consisting of Messrs. W. C Cardew (Chairman), P. A Polin, and Donald Fletcher, Js. P , first went through the list of applicants. Those thrown aside were afterwards allowed to make explanations to the board in connection with their respective applications, with the result that out of 107 applicants only three were eventually thrown out. The members of the Coonamble branch of the Catholic Federation held a meeting in St. Patrick 's Hall on Sunday, August 16. Rev. Father O'Farrell presided. Mr. J. T. Farrell (the district organiser) emphasised that the Federation is not a political body, it was an organisation for the purpose of advancing the religious, civil and social rights of Catholics throughout Australia, and it was making no effort to influence the political views of its members. Father O'Farrell is president. The meeting elected the following officers: Vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Landers and Jno. Carrigg; committee, Misses J. Rigney and Gleeson (representing the Children of Mary); Misses M. Canham and Boland (for the H.A.C.B. Society, ladies' branch); Messrs. H. J. Skelton and J. Lyons (for the H.A.C.B Society, men 's branch) ; Messrs J. Geary, E. Keating, P. Keady, Frank Farrell, J. H. Gilligan, W. Landers, Mrs. Jno. Collins, Miss K. Canham (representing the parishioners); Mr. J. Lyons, secretary; Mr. W. A. Trainor, treasurer; Mrs. Permewan, Miss M. Stapleton and Miss K. Canham, lady organisers.
