  OBITUARY
  Mr. J. A. Gilligan
A well-known resident of the Coonamble district - Mr. James Ambrose Gilligan - died suddenly at Coonamble on Friday afternoon. He was 64 years of age.
Born at Castlereagh about two miles from the Nepean River, near Penrith, the deceased's father, the late Mr. Martin Gilligan, his mother, and members of the family migrated to the district in 1888. The long journey was undertaken by an eight-horse team and waggonette, the roads in those days being crude and, in many parts, undefined. Settling here the late Mr. Gilligan's father acquired about 7,000 acres of good land on what was then known "Bundy" country, his being designated "Woodside". Eventually he established the Woodside Hotel, which was recognised as one of the best conducted hostelries in the back country.
Reverting to the late Mr. James Gilligan, he also acquired a property at Bundy, and was the original owner of "Llangollan" at the extreme end of Castlereagh Street, now occupied by Mr. H. Shanklin. For a number of years he engaged in pastoral pursuits, in which avocation he was successful. The cause of death was heart failure, supplemented with blood pressure.
The late Mr. Gilligan was of the reserved type of man and was held in very high esteem by those who knew him, in the Coonamble and adjoining districts. For a number of years his wife and daughters have resided in Pine Street, Marrickville. Besides the widow, deceased is survived by the following:-
Messrs Paul (Baradine), Claude (Coonamble), sons; Misses. Gwendoline (South Annandale Post Office), Beryl (State Lottery Office), Mercia (nurse at the Coast Hospital), there is also a son (Ambrose) from the first marriage.
The brothers are Messers. Joseph (Wollstonecraft), Peter (Coonamble), Martin (North Strathfield), John (Penrith), Richard (Auburn), and the sisters: Mrs. F. Farrell (Coonamble), Mrs. G. D. Lane (Petersham), and Miss. Elenor (Burwood).
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Catholic portion of the Cemetery. The Rev. Father O'Farrell, P.P., read the last prayers at the graveside.
Mrs. Ness had charge of the funeral arrangements.
  "Llangollan" - Welsh town.
