  Prominent citizen dies here
  A heart attack, which occurred while he was playing golf with friends on the Dell Rapids golf course Wednesday last week, claimed the life of a prominent Dell Rapids citizen. Ervin P. Van Buren, retired attorney, died at the age of 70. Private services for the family were held Saturday morning and interment took place in the Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls. The Rev. Donald Greenough officiated. Pallbearers were Duane Crisp, Raymond Crisp, Henry Booker, Clauss Bokker, Harvey Pederson and Weert Kampmeyer. Memorial services took place in the afternoon in the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church.
  Ervin Paul Van Buren was born Sept. 23, 1897 in Wahpeton, N.D. the son of A.E. Van Buren and Anna Paulson Van Buren. He graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1913 and served in the US Marine Corps in WWI from 1916 1918.
  Upon his discharge from the service he returned to the University of Minnesota where he was graduated second in the class of 1923 in the College of Law and earned high distinctions of being selected Note Editor of the Minnesota Law Review and elevated to the Order of the Coif. He received the Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor degrees also. On graduating he came to Dell Rapids and was associated with the firm of Krause and Krause. After the death of Homer Krause in 1924 the firm was known as Krause and Van Buren until 1948 when it assumed the present name of Van Buren and Vogt. During his years of practice he made many significant contributions to the statutory and decisional law of South Dakota and the nation include participation in several leading cases such as Adron V. Evan which are uniformly cited by legal writers. Active professionally, he was a member of the State Bars of Minnesota and South Dakota, the American Bar Association, and the Mitchell Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity.
  On June 26, 1934 he married Mae Shepard Bartlett in Madison. They had one son, Paul Bartlett, now an attorney with General Electric's Nuclear Energy Division in California.
  Mr. Van Buren took an active part in the affairs of his town and county as served as City Attorney for Dell Rapids and was Minnehaha County Republican Central Committeeman for some time. He was former president of the Hills of Rest Memorial Park. He served as Commander for the Geo. A. Fitzgerald Post 65 American Legion, was past Grand Master of Lodge No. 40 AF&AM, and past Chef de Guerre of the 40 et8. He was a member of the El Riad Shrine Temple, the Lions club and Commercial Club and served as president of the latter two.
  As president of the Park Board for many years he was instrumental in the landscaping and development of the Dell Rapids Park, including designing the outdoor theater and old bathhouse and the construction of the new pavilion after the original building was destroyed by fire. He also served as president of the Dell Rapids Board of Education, chairman of the Boy Scout Troop and was a member of the IOOF. A member of the United Methodist church, he served on the Board and was active in church affairs.
  His widow, son Paul Bartlett and bother Phillip Van Buren of Fergus Falls, Minn., survive. A sister Sada and two infant sisters preceded him in death.
