  John Gick
 December 20th, 2010
 John Walter Gick, 93, of Lafayette, died on Monday, December 20, 2010 at Clarian Arnett Hospital. Born November 13, 1917 in Earl Park, he was the son of the late John Alfred and Sophia Brettnacher Gick. He was a graduate of Oxford High School. He served in the Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Ena Lewis on March 9, 1946 in Oxford, and she survives. Mr. Gick was a farmer for 30 years and a ground’s keeper for Purdue University for 20 years. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf, going to the Senior Center, playing cards, and bowling. Surviving with his wife is a son, Anthony L. Gick (wife, Carol) of Taylor, MI; a daughter, Kathleen Mary Southern (husband, Malcolm) of Franklin, TN; and a brother, Victor Gick of Fowler. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Jon, Damian, Christopher, and Andrew, three great grandchildren, and one step-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Desmond John Gick. Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Monday, December 27, 2010 at Hippensteel Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with Rosary at 10:00 a.m. Father Eric Underwood officiating.  Enlisted and entered active service on 18 Sep 1940; Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis as Private in Quartermaster Corps; Serial # 15058922
 Army Separation Qualification Record: Summary of Military Occupation: Foreman Warehouse: In charge of up to 50 men in unloading freight from cars. Made proper distribution of supplies to various warehouses on the military reservation. 41 months in Iceland, England, and France. Dad was attached to 533d Quartermaster Group which was stationed near Mynydd Lliw, Monmouthshire on or about 19 Mar 1944. This may have been the period when Dad met Mom.
 Per book, The American GI in Europe in World War II: The March to D-Day, the 533d on 7 Jun 1944 served to unload ships, working at dumps, evacuating the wounded, etc.

 Dad during his enlistment in the U.S. Army was returned to Templeton, IN for recuperation via the Queen Elizabeth departing 13 Feb1945, from Gourock, Scotland and arriving New York, New York, 19 Feb 1945. At this time he was 'TEC 4', 'QMC'. Dad never spoke of being returned to the States for recuperation. He was assigned to 'Movement order: TD Group E319-6TD'. This group had 83 members and the order stipulated several concerns: 1,) About 9 Feb 1945 move from present overseas station to reception center in US, for purpose of recuperation, to be followed by assignment to proper overseas station by first available water transportation; 2) Upon arrival at reception center, members will be authorized 30 days recuperation at agreed location (Templeton, IN for Dad). Recuperation will not be subtracted from earned leave credit; 3) Members must not discuss, write about, etc. military matters. Outgoing Transport: TA-187: Queen Elizabeth Passenger list, 19 Feb 1945, numerous ArmyTD groups such as E319-TD6 and other military groups, pages 13-134, total military personnel 3147, The Queen Elizabeth embarked with other non-military groups. TA-187 was a convoy member, TA-187 had only 1 merchant ship (Queen Elizabeth) and two escorts, Impulsive and Oribi, both of which escorted only 13-14 Feb 1945. He reported to Camp Atterbury on 23 Feb 1945 before returning home for his 30 day leave after 41 months overseas in the European and American theater of operations.
  Dad was honorably discharged from Camp Atterbury on 25 Apr 1945 as a Technician 4th Grade 533d Quartermaster Group. HIs military occupational specialty was Foreman, Warehouse 252 with no military qualifications. His battles and campaigns were Normandy and German Campaigns. He received no wounds in action. He left service outside the continental U.S. and returned as: Departure 5 Sep 1941 - destination European Theater - Arrival 15 Sep 1941; Departure /Arrival in U.S. - 18 Feb 1945. Total length of service was: continental service 1y, 1m, 24d; foreign service was: 3y, 5m, 14d.
  Reason for discharge was Section III, AR 615-362, dependency {needed by his family}
