According to Plummer and Early, The Blanket Makers "a shy, reserved lad, not fond of field sports but more attached to business and home". Married Age 32 whilst resident in West End, Witney, Oxfordshire (same street as wife). Entertained John Wesley in his home. Wesley also gave annual sermons to Early's workers at Woodgreen from 1761 (Wesley's personal records refer to a sermon given 2 Jul 1777 at Woodgreen). A Witness (as John Early Junior) to marriages of Joseph Shorter (a blanketweaver) and Mary Seely at Witney (St. Mary), Oxfordshire 7 Oct 1769, Robert Matthews and Ann Smith at Witney (St. Mary), Oxfordshire 6 Jul 1771, John Dix and Elizabeth Smith at Witney (St. Mary), Oxfordshire 12 Jun 1773 and Richard Flexney and Hannah Horwood at Witney (St. Mary), Oxfordshire 19 Nov 1778 (all times signed marriage license). of Witney at time of marriage. Signed marriage license. Master of the Witney Blanket Weavers Company. John Early the younger of Witney on son Edward's apprenticeship record. Listed as a blanket weaver in 1791 Universal British Directory of principal inhabitants of Witney (as John Early Junior). Named as an executor of brother-in-law William Luckett's will of 1792 (as John Earley the younger of Witney, blanket weaver, also bequeathed a 1 guinea ring). Bequeathed his messuage and tenement etc. in Witney in his occupation, copyhold meadow ground in Hailey Meadow, messuage and tenement etc. in Witney adjoining that in which he was living, all other messuages and tenements, residue of estate and named as joint trustee of any part of £300 bequeathed to brother Thomas unpaid at time of brother Thomas's death for support of his children (with exception of Edward) in father's will of 1794 (as John Early the younger, sole executor). Named as an executor of will of Thomas Empson, a blanket weaver of Witney, dated 28 Mar 1799 (as John Early the elder, will proved London 14 Jan 1807). 1805 secured a large order from the Hudson's Bay Company which he then shared with his fellow manufacturers. Possibly executor, with son Edward, of will of Ann Brooks proved Oxford 13 Jan 1809 (as a blanket weaver of Witney). Keeper of the Blanket Weavers Company warehouse in London in 1814. Died Age 86 (87 on gravestone transcription). John Early the elder, gentleman of Witney, will dated 13 May 1824 (and witnessed by John Collis of Hailey, Thomas Jeffrey of Witney and James Rose, attorney of Bampton), proved Oxford 22 May 1829 by executors. Sons John and Edward named as executors. Will references wife Sarah, sons Edward Early (and his son Edward), John Early, Henry Early, Richard Early, Joseph Early and Thomas Early and daughters Sarah, Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth. Bequests to his children made with consideration to all advancements previously made.
