Notes
a. RecordIdNumber:   MH:N720
Note:   According to Plummer and Early, The Blanket Makers had relatives among the leading blanket makers, married age 21 and died age 87.
Supposedly had only 12 children although 13 have been identified.
According to Jane Cavell's History of the Early Family of Witney she was from an old Witney family that had been making blankets even longer than the Early's (the name Collier had been associated with blankets since the 16th century). According to "King" John Early (in an undated later to "Dear Charles") Sarah or "Sally" was "bred up at the Black Horse public house where William Seely now lives". According to Jane Cavell this was in West End, but is not known to have been a public house until the 19th century nor is there any evidence that Sarahâ€s father or stepfather was a publican so, as such, was probably still a private house at the time.
Reputedly "heard John Wesley preach in the streets of Witney in about 1770, was converted and led her whole family into the Methodist Society." Another source suggests that her conversion occurred later. Her grandson John Early wrote that she was one of the so-called "thunder and lightning Methodists" converted in the great storm of 1783: "my grandmother then about 30 years old was confined with her son John. Sarah Early, Mrs Biggers, Mrs Shepherd and several others … were converted to God by means of this dreadful storm, imagining the world was at an end". This storm was so terrible that "many thought the day of judgement was come", as John Wesley himself recorded in his journal.
Bequeathed quarter share of freehold estate consisting of messuages and tenements where he was currently residing, brewhouse, stable, garden and backside with appurtenances on death of maternal grandmother, aunt Suky Smith and mother in maternal step grandfather's will of 1770.
of St. Peter-le-Bailey, Oxford at time of marriage. Signed marriage license. Marriage witnessed by John Shorter (presumably her stepfather) and Thomas Betteris (both signed marriage license).
Bequeathed £20 on reaching age of 21 in maternal grandmother's will of 1775 (as Sarah Collier).
Bequeathed all his messuages and tenements etc. plus use of all his household goods and furniture etc. for remainder of life or widowhood in husband's will of 1824.
Died Age 87 (registered Sep 1840).
