Note: Alternatively may have been the Richard Darby baptised Bungay (Holy Trinity), Suffolk 2 Mar 1782, son of Robert Darby and Judith Cornish. of Beccles at time of marriage. Signed marriage license with his mark. Marriage witnessed by Abm. Clarke and Elizabeth Darby (presumably a relation). According to Suffolk Camra website Richard Darby was landlord of the Hermitage Inn, 3 Bridge Street, Beccles in 1839 whilst William Darby was landlord of the Marquis of Cornwallis Inn, Northgate Street, Beccles in 1823 and the Ship Inn, 10 Bridge Street, Beccles in 1839 (as a James Lydmore was landlord of this inn in 1823 likely he was the William Darby born Herringfleet, Suffolk who married Susan Lydamore). All 3 public houses have been subsequently demolished. Richard Darby paid poor rate of £5-6-8 for the Hermitage Inn in 1828 rising to £10 in 1841. In 1851 the Inn was taken over by his son Samuel. Amongst the deaths reported in the Beccles and Bungay Weekly News 18th Apr 1865 "On the 13th April, at Beccles, aged 79 years, Mr. Richard Darby, formerly landlord of the Hermitage Inn, in that place." Died Age 78 whilst resident in Beccles (registered Wangford Jun 1865). A deceased innkeeper at time of son John's marriage in 1869. Possibly related to: 1) William Darby (age 49, also an inn keeper), Susan Darby (age 53, presumably his wife), Harriett Darby (age 11, presumably their daughter), George Lydamore (age 21) and Samuel Doddington (age 20) who were living adjacent to Richard at time of 1841 census. This was the William Darby of Beccles and Susan Lydamore (née Doddington) a widow of Beccles, married Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 12 Aug 1829 as witnessed by William Goate and Ann Doddington (all signed marriage license), and parents of the Harriett Anna Darby baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 5 Mar 1830. According to 1851 Census William Darby was born Herringfleet, Suffolk c1791 and his wife Susan Darby was born Sotterley, Suffolk c1787. 2) Robert Darby (a waterman) of Beccles and Harriet Wright of Beccles married Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 16 Nov 1829 as witnessed by E. Goffin and A. Wright (all signed marriage license) with offspring Beaumont Darby born 13 May 1830, baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 11 Jun 1830, Anna Darby born 23 Nov 1831, baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 23 Dec 1831, Stephen Darby born 12 Mar 1834, baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 11 Apr 1834, Robert Darby born 11 Apr 1834?, baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 8 May 1835, Helen Darby born 12 Sep 1836, baptised Beccles (St. Michael), Suffolk 15 Dec 1836, Samuel Darby baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 2 Dec 1838, Charles Darby baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 3 Dec 1840, George Darby baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 31 Jul 1842, Isabella Darby baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 3 Mar 1844, Edgar Darby born Geldeston, Norfolk c1846, baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 20 Aug 1854 and Harriet Darby privately baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 30 May 1849. According to 1851 census Robert Darby was born Geldeston, Norfolk c1806 so would have been the Robert Darby baptised Geldeston (St. Michael), Norfolk 22 Dec 1805, son of Robert Darby and Rebecca Cunningham. 1841 Census lived Bridge Street, Beccles, Suffolk - Age 50 (mistranscribed as Darley). 1851 Census lived Linwade, Great Witchingham, Norfolk - Age 64 1861 Census lived 39 Bridge Street, Beccles, Suffolk (next to Ship Inn) without wife - Age 77.
