Note:   From 1st edition of Beccles Weekly News 21st Apr 1857 "Mr. Samuel Darby, coal and timber merchant, who thanked the public for patronage conferred upon him for eleven years, and stated that, in addition to his coal and timber trades, he had commenced the brick, tile, and drainpipe business".
 There are many other references to Samuel and Bridge House, Gillingham at http://www.foxearth.org.uk/BecclesStreets/Streets__Bridge_Street.htm. The timber merchants he founded in 1844 expanded to also supply "Every description of red & white Bricks, Pavements, Pan & Roof Tiles, Drain Pipe, Chimney Pots etc. Stockholm & Coal Tar, Pantile Splines & Ceiling Laths; Scantling of every description cut to order. Wherries constantly attending at Yarmouth upon the Steam Traders from London, Hull & Newcastle for conveyance of goods to Norwich, Beccles & Lowestoft" by 1858, became a limited company (Darby Brothers Ltd.) in 1912 and is still in business today.
 The 1852 Vestry minutes stated "Samuel Darby agrees to pay £10 for the Hermitage from 5 April to 10 October and then resign premises."
 A schooner "Mary and Sarah" owned by Samuel was lost off Filey, Yorkshire in 1860.
 In 1861 purchased the land now occupied by 20 and 22 Station Road, Beccles.
 A town councillor between 1876 and 1882.
 In 1883 erected the grandstand for the revived Bungay races.
 Died age 66 whilst resident at Gillingham (registered Loddon Jun 1884).
 Will proved Norwich 21 Jul 1884 by widow (and executor) Jemima Darby. Personal Estate £6,274 19s 7d.
 The Beccles Paper of 26 Feb 1885 referred to "Bridge House, late Samuel Darby. Household Furniture; 337 Lots."
 Deceased at time of daughter Anna Maria's marriage in 1890 and a deceased timber merchant at time of daughter Clara's marriage in 1893 and daughter Georgiana's marriage in 1895.
  1851 Census lived 13 Bridge Street, Beccles, Suffolk - Age 33.
 1861 Census lived Bridge House, Gillingham, Norfolk - Age 43.
 1871 Census lived near the Bridge, Gillingham, Norfolk - Age 52 (as Sammie).
