Zachariah COLLINS, Sr. (unknown) was born 1780-1785 in Possibly North Carolina, USA or Virginia, USA, and died Bef. 04 July 1837 in Adair County, Kentucky, USA. He Married (1) Unknown bef. 1807. He married (2) bef. 1820. He married (3) Edna bef. 21 July 1830.
There are various theories about the parents of ZACHARIAH COLLINS and nothing has been established with any degree of certainty. Accepting the family tradition that ZACHARIAH's parents may have died in Tennessee, USAabout 1809 and that ZACHARIAH came to Kentucky, USAabout that time, interesting information has surfaced in Carter County, Tennessee, USA, the predecessor county of Johnson County, Tennessee, USA.
A ZACHARIAH COLLINS appeared on the tax records of Carter County for 1803 (Captain Etheldred Smiths district), 1805 (Captain Samuel Bryan's District), 1806 (Captain Etheldred Smiths District), 1807, (Captain Etheldred Smiths District) and 1809 (Captain William Jones District). Although the records show acres of real estate owned for most taxpayers, in each case ZACHARIAH did not own land. These records were kept through 1820, but ZACHARIAH last appears there in 1809
______________________________________________________Zachariah Collins, Sr. Zachariah, Sr. served in the War of 1812 as a private in the 7th Regiment, Barbee's Kentucky Militia. The muster rolls show his son, Zachariah Collins, Jr. served in the Civil War in Co. C 13th KY Cavalry, not infantry. Otherwise, this inscription is correct for Zachariah Collins, Jr.
Family tradition is that Zachariah's parents died while making the move by covered wagon from North Carolina to Adair County, Kentucky and were buried along the way. To date no record of their place of burial has been located. Researchers have conflicting reports as to his parentage. FindaGrave and descendants of Zachariah Collins, Jr. provide the names Thomas Collins and Susannah Mary Wallace Collins as his parents. Unfortunately, this information is not sourced. A careful review of the Estate of Thomas Collins who married Susannah Mary Wallace Collins names their children but Zachariah is not named as their child in this probate.
In 1806 a Zachariah Collins lived on the plantation of George Deatherage in Surrey County, North Carolina and continued to live in the neighborhood until 1809. George Deatherage and his brother, John Deatherage, were large landowners, slaveholders, etc. After their deaths there were lawsuits among their heirs. In the deposition of Zachariah Collins ( /s/Zach. Collings) dated September 22, 1827, Zachariah stated that he had lived in about a mile of George Deatherage. He further stated that he left that country in 1809. When asked, "In what date did you live with old George Deatherage?" He replied "I think it was in the year 1806".
This time line fits with Zachariah's arrival in Adair County, Kentucky. The first record located to date placing Zachariah in Adair County is the 1810 Federal Census of Adair County, Kentucky. Zachariah was not listed in the Adair County tax roll in 1810.
Butch Johnson has researched the Collins line extensively. He has meticulously documented his research and does not claim his research is conclusive. Butch has Zachariah's parents as Anthony J. Collins and Mary Elizabeth Harrison Collins. His reasoning is: "Anthony Collins was of an age that Zachariah could have been his son, probably the oldest. Anthony lived on the NC-VA state line in the 1790`s alongside Thomas, William and Roger Collins. By 1799-1800 Anthony had moved not too distant onto the Dan River, a neighbor to the Deatherage family, and in 1802 he purchased land that had formerly belonged to George Deatherage. In 1806 Zachariah Collins lived on the plantation of George Deatherage and continued to live in the neighborhood until 1809 when he left. Now I know this all circumstantial evidence, but I believe it is the best we have as to who the father of Zachariah Collins was."
Zachariah Collins Sr. was born in February 27, 1782 in Yadkin, Stokes County, North Carolina. He married Edna "Edney" Burton on July 21, 1806 in Johnston, Kentucky. Several children were named in the census. The name of Nancy's husband, if any, is unknown.
  7. Zachariah Collins, Jr. was born July 19, 1822 in Adair County, Kentucky.   8. Edna Collins was born about 1823 in Adair County, Kentucky.   Note: Butch Johnson has Edna as Zachariah's second wife with his first wife being Ann Burton born about 1784 in Warren, North Carolina. Married Dec 21, 1797 in Middlesex, Virginia. Died before 1802. It is questionable whether this Zachariah was the Zachariah who moved to Adair County, Kentucky.
