Notes
a. Note:   Residence:
1841 House called Hickstead, Twineham located next to Castle Inn (Castle Inn still exists at the beginning of the 21st Century)
  1851 House called Whanbar, Hurstpierpoint
At some time prior to1886 Mary and Peter lived at DickTurpin's Cottage where Mary would sell sweets and light refreshments.Legend has it that DickTurpin stayed for a brief time at the cottage in Haywards Heath. Sadly, despite the name, no documentary evidence has yet been found to link this ancient white-washed cottage with this infamous highwayman. What is more likely is the legend concerning Haywards Heath being named after a highwayman called Jack Hayward and the legend being further embroidered by association with the notorious 18th century highwayman DickTurpin. An old map of Haywards Heath dated 1638 shows the cottage as "Mr Morley's House". Situated at the northern end of Paddock Hall Road, the cottage was demolished shortly before 1887 when the Police Station was built on the site. The Police Station remained there until the late 1980's when it was demolished and flats were built.
