Notes
a. Note:   Grandpa is buried in Oakridge Cemetery; Section 25; Lot 155. I was a Pall Bearer.
Grandpa left Eureka Kansas and came to Chicago in 1901 where he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as a conductor. He sent most of his pay to his parents who lost all their money during the depression of 1894. In 1903 his parents joined him in Chicago. Grandpa lived in a boarding house run by Fannie Hammond. Fannie was the mother of Alice Imogene Hammond who became grandpa's wife. Fannie kept telling young Alice to stay away from those railroad men but she didn't, thank goodness or we wouldn't be here.
James W. Harney Sr. as told by Alice Imogene Harney (Hammond).
Grandpa was a Mason, he belonged to the Bensenville, IL Lodge 1159. A FM
Grandpa was a quiet man who did not let his feelings show. The only thing he ever told me about himself was that as a young boy in Kansas he had a pet squirrel that he carried around in his coat. Grandpa loved sports, it was common for him to watch one ball game on TV while listening to another on the radio. He liked to eat peanuts drink beer and smoke a cigar while enjoying the ball games. Once when we went to visit, grandpa was not at home, grandma was worried because he had gone to the store and had been gone longer than usual, it was a cold winter day so I put on my coat and started out toward the store looking for him. I found him standing in a store front resting. He was wearing an overcoat that must have weighed 40 pounds and was carrying a heavy shopping bag. Grandpa was a proud man and would not allow me to wait for him to rest, his legs caused him pain when walking. He gave me his shopping bag to carry home and sent me on my way. He arrived home a short while later sat down in front of the TV and emptied his shopping bag. One can of peanuts, one six pack of beer and a box of cigars, he was set for the weekend. If grandma started to complain to loudly about the games he would reach up and turn down his hearing aid, which was in the frames of his glasses, he would then grin from ear-to-ear. Grandpa loved apple pie with a slice of cheese on top.
William and Alice were separated for about eight years, Alice said she was pushed into marriage when she was very young by her mother. According to Betty Ann Jones, the separation either began or was over when William F. Harney Jr. was about 8 years old in 1918.
When William retired he and Alice moved from Bensenville, IL to Tucson, AZ. After a while they moved to a small chicken ranch in Arkansas then back to Chicago. Info from Nancy Andre Harney. *** Could the chicken ranch have been in or near Formosa, Arkansas? The town of Formosa, Arkansas appears on one of the notebook pages mentioned below.***
On 17 Aug 1969 John and Alice Luther held a birthday party for grandpa, it was his 88th year. At the party my brothers and I met our half-brother and sister for the first time. Ralph Phillip Harney and Nancy Andre Vogel (Harney). It was a very good day for all of us. When Ralph arrived he said"I understand I have some brothers here". The ice was broken and we had a very nice visit. Grandma Harney was very happy to see us all together.
After grandpa died grandma gave be some pages from a small notebook that belonged to grandpa, William Foss Harney Sr.
