a. Note:   N364 Details re final illness and death (see medical below) obtained from Shirley Parsons on 15/2/00. Shirley recalled her grandmother (who lived with her family) feeling unwell and with no appetite for her evening meal after one of her regular visits to the hospital. She complained of the rudeness of the nurse who treated her, referring to her as "that piece" (the strongest term of condemnation that she ever used towards another) and making mention of the fact that "she never even sterilized the needle". She was admitted to hospital and operated upon and was thought to be recovering but after about two days died suddenly one evening. Shirley recalls the local shopkeeper knocking on the door around tea time to say that Shirley's mother Jessie was wanted at the hospital urgently. (The local shopkeeper being the only neighbour with a telephone was the point of contact for communication.)
