a. Note:   nn and Jane Taylor were exhibited in the Gallery of Distinguished Englishwomen in the Chicago Exhibition of 1893. The catalogue says: "As Mrs Barbould's books in prose, so those of the two daughters of Isaac Taylor in verse mark an era in children's books. Original Poems supply household words wherever the English language is spoken, the best-known being probably My Mother, by Ann; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, by Jane." The portrait of Ann and Jane Taylor by their father, standing side by side as children, in the garden at Lavenham, is at Marden Ash.
 James Medland, a widower of Newington, with several children, proposed marriage to Jane in November 1821, but Jane refused, possibly because she had known since 1817 that she was seriously ill. But she became close friends with James' children, particularly Elizabeth, who later married Jane's brother, Isaac.
