Note: See "Some Incidents in the History of the Hudson Family" in Media for sister-in-law Daisy Geraldine Beasley Hudson's first impressions of the Hudson family she married into in 1898. - - - - - In July 1936, Mary wrote to her brother Cassius from Birmingham: This little visit to Birmingham is my vacation, a little rest and change to give me a little more energy to go through the necessary preparation for opening of school. I had hoped to try and do some remodeling on the old home place this summer, but see it's going to be too late to do anything but some necessary work for winter. Gertrude (Mary's sister-in-law and widow of Rev. John Hudson) spent last night with us. She is looking well but seems not to have as much life and energy as she did before her sickness last winter. Mary Nell has been up here nearly three weeks. She and I are going to Mr. (Will) Smyer's brother's (Walter A. Smyer) in West End for the day. I am afraid to go about much on account of the epidemic of infantile paralysis. It seems Alabama is having to pay for cutting down on appropriations for health in the state. Hoping you are all well and that you will write soon. I expect to go home latter part of week. Love to all, Your sister, Mary Broadway is a major street in Gary, Lake County, Indiana, and the streets west of Broadway are named for U.
