Note: Mary Florence Irwin Smyer, 83, a resident of Annapolis for six years and previously of Crofton for 28 years, died May 22 at Ginger Cove retirement community after a five-year illness with Alzheimer's disease. Born June 14, 1920, in Hollins, Ala., Mrs. Smyer received a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn. She taught in Anne Arundel County public schools. She was a former deacon at Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church in Crofton and enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and volunteering. Her first husband, Ralph A. Irwin, died in 1976. Surviving are her second husband, Robert Smyer, whom she married May 3, 1997; one son, Robert M. Irwin of Annapolis; one daughter, Janice I. Milazzo of Millersville; five grandchildren; and one great-grand-child. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church, 1657 Crofton Parkway, Crofton. Arrangements are by Evans Funeral Home in Bowie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
