Samuel McLaughlin, the 13-year-old son of Samuel McLaughlin, of Hills, was the first Fourth of July victim Thursday. He was holding a large firecracker in his hand, and thinking the fuse had gone out looked into it. The cracker exploded in his face and the powder shot into his left eye. Fortunately none of the paper entered the eye. He was brought to the city for treatment and the physician believes he will be able to save the lad's sight. </i> NOTE - The age of 13 as listed in the article would certainly seem to indicate that this was James Samuel Laughlin who usually went by the name of Samuel. However it indicates that he was the son of Samuel McLaughlin instead of the expected John McLaughlin. The location of Iowa City matches up with the known location of the father and son at that time. Further research indicates the following: Page 81 of the Hartman book (The Hartman Family, 1727 to Present) has the following entry: <i>Along with their own children, Alvaretta and Sam McLaughlin took into their home and reared Mr. McLaughlin's nephew, son of John McLaughlin - whose name was also (James) Sam McLaughlin. His mother had died when Sam was just an infant. He was born July 4, 1890 and died October 21, 1957, in Los Angeles County, California. </i>Thus, the older Samuel McLaughlin in the article was actually an uncle and not the father of the younger Samuel McLaughlin.<i> </i>---------------------------------------- After the birth of James Samuel McLaughlin in 1890, the mother, Jane Davis, died several weeks thereafter. All three of the surviving children were then sent to live with relatives in Iowa. Mary and her sister, Katherine, were sent to Muscatine, Iowa to live with Robert S. Amlong and wife Mary Anna McLaughlin-Amlong, a sister to the father of the children, John McLaughlin. James Samuel McLaughlin, the infant son, was sent to live with Samuel Smith McLaughlin and his family in nearby Johnson County, Iowa. ---------------------------------------- He was enumerated twice in the 1910 US Census in Johnson County, Iowa. The first was on 16 Apr 1910 when he was living with and working for the Seraphine and Clara Grinzer family which was not too distant from his uncle's farm house. The second enumeration was 10 days later on 26 Apr 1910 when he was listed as living at the household of his uncle, Samuel Smith McLaughlin. ------------------------------------- James Samuel McLaughlin at age 65 married an African-American woman in Los Angeles, California in 1957. He died 6 months later but he apparently kept this inter-racial marriage a secret from his sister, Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin, who arrived at the airport to arrange for his funeral and she was greeted by his widow and children. ------------------------------------- It is not perfectly clear if his first name was James or Samuel. It appears that he used Samuel throughout his adult life. On his World War I Draft Registration card from 1917, his name was entered as James Sam McLaughlin and he signed it as Sam McLaughlin. ---------------------------------------

c.	Note: NF125 Note: The exact marriage date is not known. Some researchers claim that Clara was the first wife and they quickly divorced. Others seem to think that he married Clara after he and Laura Michel were divorced. No records have yet been found. However, Samuel appears on the 1910 census in Johnson County, Iowa listed as Single. One year later he was married to Laura May Michel so it would seem that there was very little time for him to have been married prior to Laura. That gives more credence to the thought that Clara Pate must have been his second wife. ------------------------------------------------------------
