Notes
a. Note:   My grandparents settled in a claims cabin in the late 1850's on west Oak Ridge near the east edge of Whitewater Twp. A summer drought dried up their water supply, and Grandmother would take a shoulder yoke and two wood buckets and make a 3 mile walk down into a side valley to a spring near the Whitewater River. A large group of Wampbog Indians had camped near this spring where they came each Spring and lived during the summer months.
When Grandmother started back up the valley trail with her buckets of water, some of the Indians would follow her; women, men, children; always someone would tag along, which bugged Granny, as neither she or the Indians could speak the other's language. Carrying an unborn baby, she could not climb the bluff-side out of the valley and had to wait for Grandfather to come and carry the buckets up. The Indians stayed with her till she left with Grandfather. (The wood buckets held just a little under 4 gal. each.)
My reason for writing this about these wilderness natives, (men, women, and children), is that never once did any of them raise a hand against this white woman, who alone, came to the spring. Today, in our civilized, educated, Christianized society, a woman is not entirely safe on the streets or anywhere else among her own people. And our children and teenagers surely are not, where thousands of them disappear, vanish forever every year, off the streets and roads of our nation. Something to think about, isn't it? And we refer to those early woodland natives as SAVAGES !
