Notes
a. Note:   o local tax records owned several hundred acres in that region.
In the spring of 1844, David James sold his shareof inheritance from the death of his father, Thomas James, Six Mile Creek, Henry Co., Ky. to his brother, John James, and loaded all their belongings into a two wheel cart and left Kentucky to migrate into the Missouri territory with intentions to settle in the Boone's Lick area.
By accident their wagon broke down near the Gasconde River on the Boone's lick and Potosi road and realizing repairs would take several days, David went in search of help and food to suffice their needs.
Perhaps by divine providence or other mitigating circumstances, the first home place he came upon, was inhabited by his wife's brother, James Huffman, who had moved to Missouri from Hickman Co., KY. only a few months earlier.
Once the necessary repairs were completed to their cart, they decidedit was to their benefit to settle nearby and raise their family.
David bought the improvements on some land owned by Benjamin Smith and completed enteringit from the government in Smiths name. There David James and his wife Barbaraspent the rest of their natural lives.
In common with the other southern sympathizers in this county, David James was frequently robbed and his property destroyed during the Civil War, and both he and his family suffered many indignities at the hands of the Union troops as well as the bushwhackers.
