  Arrived in Sydney on 16 August 1859 aboard the ship "Orwell" as a free immigrant. His first wife, Elizabeth, probably died in England around March of 1859, prior to his emigrating to Australia.
 Married widow, Rachel Le Moine nee Hamon, in 1861 and resided at Berryvale corner, East Milton. He had been a carpenter aboard the "Cutty Sark"
 He purchased land near Ulladulla, NSW in 1860. Ref: Australian Biographical & Genealogical Record 1842-1899, Volume 1.
 John, a farmer and carpenter, moved to Milton, NSW. The town of Milton was established in 1860 and is 61km south of Nowra and 7km north of Ulladulla.

  His entry states, in part, the following:
 He left Plymouth for Australia on the ship "ORWELL" (or "ARWELL") on 16 April 1859.
 On the side of an old sketch, held by John, of "Torwood House", Torquay (a large three story country home) was written "Torwood House and Farm: My father, John Mudge, his father and his grandfather lived here for 172 years and supplied Plymouth and Torquay, with butter, milk, eggs, bacon and cyder (cider)".
 This is thought to have been written by John Mudge and indicates that the Mudge family had been established around the Torquay area since the late 17th century.
