 Charles A. Bigelow Family
 Charles A. Bigelow was born Oct. 30, 1847 in Connewango, N.Y. and married Ellen VanSlyke, who was born March 15, 1851 in Ellicottville, N.Y. They came to Rugby in 1885 with their three children, Eva, John and Hattie.
 Charles Engaged in the lumber and real estate business. He filed a claim which is now Bigelow Addition in Rugby. He started a herd of cattle and when dining cars were added to the Great northern trains, he supplied all the milk and cream for the dining cars from St. Paul to Seattle and return.
 Because of the lack of educational facilities, they labored long and incessantly for the establishment of schools. Ellen taught her children at home until schools were established. The first Rugby school was held in the Bigelow home. Charles and Ellen could be found wherever there was something for the betterment of young people.
 Charles was one of Pierce County's first representatives to the territorial legislature and as such, assisted in the formation of the state and the state government.
 Charles passed away in 1895 from typhoid fever. Ellen passed away in 1915. Hattie died in 1898 at the age of 13.
 John married Sally Angeline Thompson, and they lived in Rugby practically all their lives. They had six children.
 Eva married Fred Ely and became a very important person in education. They had one son, Charles Bigelow Ely. Fred and Eva have passed away.
