  Grandma Ely Answers Last Summons
Sitting in her arm rocking chair, with her daughter, Mrs. F.M. Harris, close by, Grandma Mary A. Ely passed peacefully to her eternal rest last Saturday afternoon, at her home in this city. She had walked about the house that same morning, doing little odd tasks, and had talked to her granddaughter, Mrs. Daphne Wheeler, on the phone. There was no struggle, no pain, just a gasping breath and she had gone home.
But a little over a year ago she had been preceded "across the river" by her devoted life companion, Col. John A. Ely, to whom she was married Sept 10, 1856, at New London, Mo. She was born near that place July 17, 1838. Coming to North Dakota with her husband in March, 1884, she had shared with him the joys and struggles of the early pioneer days, including ten years on a cattle ranch in the Mouse River country. They came to Cando eighteen years ago, and this place has been her home ever since, ever growing deeper into the affection and sincere regard of loved one and friends. She would have been 81 years old next July.
Five children survive their mother; William H. Ely of Hannibal, Mo.; Sarah Helen (Mrs. F.M. Harris) Cando; Mrs. Elizabeth B. Wells, Calio, N.D.; J. Morgan Ely Grangeville, Idaho; Mrs. Mary L. Salyards, Duluth, Minn.; several grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
The local Eastern Star Chapter conducted its beautiful burial service at the home Tuesday afternoon, and a short public service was held at the Presbyterian church afterwards, conducted by Rev. Geo. B. Denison. The remains were laid to rest in the Odd Fellows cemetery, besides those of her late beloved husband.
Hers was a beautiful Christian life of faith, love and unselfish service, and in the fullness of faith she went home to her heavenly Father's "abiding place."
