Note: Center Herald, Center, Missouri, February 14, 1952 Death of Wm H. Ely William Henry Ely, 95, of Center, died at 6:15 Friday morning, February 8, 1952, in Levering hospital, Hannibal where he had been a patient since December 20. A son of John A. and Mary Lane Ely, he was born in Center June 19, 1857. His wife, Mrs. Mary Amanda Liter Ely, and one daughter, Roberta, preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Natalie Frier, who made her home with her father, one son, Jesse E. Ely of New London, four grandchildren, Mrs. Carl Painter of Hannibal, Mrs. Ada Ruth Hayden of Quiney, Mrs. Robert A. Eck and Mrs. John H. Rice, both of Rolla, three great-grandchildren, Miss Betty Jean Coleman of Quincy, Misses Natalie Jean Rice and Mary Kay Rice of Rolla, one brother J.M. Ely of Grangeville, Idaho. Mr. Ely had engaged in farming all of his life and lived for many years on the farm east of Center now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Cowden. At one time many years ago he was the superintendent of the County Farm south of Center. For a short time the family made their home on a farm near Hull, Illinois. In August 1899 he united with Olivet Christian church under the preaching of Rev. George W. Buckner Sr. Upon his retirement from active farming, he moved to Center. In 1946 he fell on the ice and broke one hip and his last illness followed a fall in his home when he broke the other hip. Mr. Ely was well known for his generosity and during his long life had befriended many people. He was greatly respected by the people of the community for his many kind acts and for the high quality of his daily living. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Olivet Christian church at Center, of which he was a member. Rev. John W. Golden conducted the rites and interment was in Olivet cemetery. Vocalist was Mrs. L.D. Norris singing "the Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pianist was Mrs. Mabel Keithly, and casket bearers were J.T. McCoy, H.J. Smith, O.L. Walkup, J.V. Shulse, H.D. Shulse, and J.R. Flowerree.
