 Mrs. J.T. Wells
Elizabeth B. Wells was born September 16, 1866 at Center, Ralla County, Missouri. She came to Dakota Territory in 1884 with her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. John A. Ely, who settled near Lakota. In the spring of 1886, they moved on to a cattle ranch on the Mouse River, where she was married to Job T. Wells, on October 6, 1886.
Mrs. Wells says, "We drove from there, over a hundred miles, to our home near Cando, Dakota Territory. Mr. Wells was here three years before we were married so had the land under cultivation besides having rented some. The first year after we were married we had 3200 bushels of wheat, averaging 25 bushels to the acre, which we sold for $0.52 per bushel. All of our grain had to be hauled 22 miles to market. We were surely glad to see the first train come into Cando in 1888 but we had no wheat to haul that year as it froze out.
We were lucky to have settled in such a nice neighberhood. None of us had much to start on but we were just as happy and had as good a time as they do now. We organized a Ladies Aid to sew for the needy ones in our community. In those days there were no fences so it was very easy for one to get lost in a storm or when out on a very dark night. We still have a lot of faith in North Dakota as we are now living on a farm of 800 acres although my son is farming it.
On November 7, 1890, our first son, Lemuel M., was born, who died in France during the World War on February 3, 1919. Fred Ely Wells was born October 15, 1894, died November 29, 1898. Russell Wells was born March 5, 1900. His address is Calio, North Dakota. Thornley Wells, born July 20, 1901. His address is 1200 American Building, Cincinnati, Ohio. Helen Elizabeth was born June 2, 1906 and married June 20, 1925. Her address is Mrs. E.B. Wyke, 415 3rd St., S.W., LeMars, Iowa.
