Note: d. He died just a couple of months after his 13th birthday and just two days before Ella was born, Sarah took his death very hard and left the family for a while. Since he was the oldest and died so young--before six of his brother and sisters were born--not much is know about him. Many letters he wrote to his father, in the possession of Ruth Ann Buck, indicate the fine young man he was and the love he had for his father and the remainder of the family. He was placed in charge of the family when C.I. went to North Dakota from Alexandria, Minn., in search of the land which he homesteaded. He seems to have handled the responsibility in an honorable manner. Grace Down provided the following information about her oldest brother. Mother always said he was the smartest child she ever knew--taught himself to read before he went to school by recognizing the words in the story books that were read to him and would then recognize them in papers and magazines. I think the letters show him to be a mature boy.
Note: Frank was the only member of this large family not to live to adulthoo
