Note: Oscar Sylvester Nowell was known as "Nig" to his friends and was also called "Big Daddy" by his grand-children.
People have often wondered how my grandfather got the nickname "Nig". The story told to me by Archie Dupree seems to make the most since to me and it goes as follows. My grandfather, Oscar, had a brother by the name of Arthur. Archie Dupree said that when Oscar and Arthur were called by their father, Marion Archie Nowell, that usually both of the boys came because it was hard to distinguish the sound of Oscar and Arthur, especially when they were in the field working. So one day after calling for one of the boys their father told Oscar, I am going to call you "Nig" so you two boys won't get your names confused.
If you listen to sound of the two names you can actually see where this story does make the most sense.
Became a master mason on April 9, 1943.
