Note:   N79 The Ancestry.com file of Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1938 and Deaths Overseas, 1939-1947 lists the death in Toronto on 26 May 1880 of a widow named Catherine Strachan who had been born in Scotland. Despite the discrepancy in birthdate, could this be Catherine Swinton Strachan? Her death shortly after that of her husband could at least partially explain the difficulty I've had so far in locating either her of any of her children in the 1881 census.
