Notes
a. Note:   N133 Notes for James Strachan
The Aberdeen Scroll Marriage Contract Book [New Registry Office, Fee Books for Proclamations, 1811-182
9] from 30 July 1822 to 31 December 1825 contains #212, p. 51: Strachan and Connol: 22nd inst [ie November] 1823. James Strachan, Confectioner in Aberdeen and Margaret Connol there, daugr. of Jno. Connol Confectioner in Aberdeen - Cautioners Jno Roberts and John Connol. H.'H ]Lab?] & Th. [Note added by Tim Smith. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a "cautioner" is "Sc. Law. One who gives or becomes security for another; a surety."
H.'H stands for householder, but 'Lab. & Th.] is not clear. They paid a fee of 1 pound. Note: this fee was not standard: the next couple paid 10/=, then 1 pound again, then 2 pounds, but the reason for this is not clear either. James and Margaret were married on 30th, 8 days later.
In the 1841 census there is family of James Strachan and Margaret. Barclay Street (which seems to be Stonehaven), occupation confectioner. The record is:
  James Strachan 35
 Margaret 35
 Jean 13
 Emily 8
 William 6
 John 5
 Margaret 3
 Catherine 1
This fits well with James's known occupation of confectioner and the birth date of William. The difficulty is that ages in the 1841 census were rpounded down to the nearest 5 years, so James would have been between 35 and 39. There is no doubt that James was married to Margaret Connol, so stated by William at his marriage. There are two separate records for the marriage of James and Margaret Connoll, noted above, and the year 1823 is correct. Provisonally it looks as if this might be the family.
There is no record of James in the 1851 census of Scotland, and I have not traced any Canadian immigration record between 1841 and 1851.
James Strachan and Margaret Connol had the following child:
WILLIAM STRACHAN was born on 01 Nov 1834 in St.Nicholas, Aberdeen. He died on 09 Nov 1879 in Toronto, ON. He married CATHERINE SWINTON on 25 Nov 1863 in Simcoe, ON, daughter of Alexander Swinton and Catherine Watson. She was born on 24 Jul 1831 in Yester, E. Lothian. She died on 26 May 1880 in Toronto.
