Notes
a. Note:   BIO: Born in Russia. Father was high-ranking military (General?) during Nicolas I(?). His nurse Julia got him out of Finland when he was an infant. He was in an orphanage until he was adopted by a Swedish family in Finland. He left Finland when he was 9 years old as a stow-away on a cargo ship. He continued to work on ships as a cabin-boy or crewman, travelling all over the world. He came to the US when he was in his early 20's. Years later, while in New York, he met his first wife (who was born and and raised in NY). He brought her to WA and settled down. They had two children. Wife and children died of TB. He met Katherina in Astoria, OR. He married her in Astoria, then they moved to Port Cesent, WA, where John owned some timber land. They lived in a log cabin and endured much hardships as pioneers. John was quite an entrepeneur, operating some small businesses. John built a two-story ranch-house, where they had (and raised) 12 children: Oscar, William, Ida (1896-1915, died with John of the flu), Emma (Wilhemina 1895), Matilda, Henry, Elmer, Charles, Maria, Jenny (1909), Victor (1908), and Julia (1907). John was know to have asthma. All papers known to contain his history and background were burned when the ranch-house burned down.
  (Information provided by Cousin Gen):
He was an orphan. I don't really know his actual nationality. He was adopted by a Swedish family. At age 14 supposedly went to sea. He met Grandma Katherine in Astoria Oregon. She had just come from Finland on a sailing vessel all the way around the horn. She was 24 years old and couldn't speak a word of English. They married and came to Port Angeles, and settled 15 miles west, what is known as Salt Creek area.
Aunt Marie told me again just last week that Grandpa Thompson was a very stern man and a great disciplinarian. Anyhow, the kids minded him and were well behaved. But after he died it was a different story. Some didn't listen to Grandma and went to drinking, with problems of course! After Grandpa's death she even took in 2 orphan boys. She raised a large family.
Information provided by Uncle Greg Lewis (Bonnell):
When he went aboard the ship, he took a dead sailor's name: John William Thompson. There are no official records of a name change.Possible Russian names:
 Geoff
 Feodarowna
 Romanoff
