  A biography of his son, James Hobbs Hanson in "The Illustrated History of Kennebec County" states that he was the son of James Hanson, a farmer, of Berwick. It also states that he was a descendant of John Hanson, whose wife, Elizabeth (Meader), along with four of their children and their maid, was captured by Indians and taken to Canada, then ransomed back. James Hanson, husband of Mary Evans, is the only James Hanson who fits this description.
