Notes
a. Note:   Birthdate listed as July 4 in Bessie Beake's birthday book.
Baptized at West Ham Church, 7 Oct 1855, as George Bake.
Notes in Laurence I. Beake's handwriting:
"GEORGE BEAKE my grandfather. Notes from what I can remember being told by my father & grandfather.
George Beake enlisted or was pressed into the Royal Navy at an early age (possibly as young as 13), deserted and came to America (ca 1870). He landed in New York and literally waded ashore when the vessel grounded. He worked in a coal mine near Scranton, Pennsylvania.
When he came to Boston he worked for Theodore Jones, of Jones, McDuffee & Stratton Co. as a gardener on his estate in Brookline, Mass. While there he met Amelia Lever who was probably a servant girl for Jones (apparently a next-door neighbor in 1880 - see notes for her). They were married Aug 16, 1880 in Boston, Mass. After they married they moved to New Jersey briefly, where my father George James Beake was born (in Belleville) May 16, 1881. They returned to Boston where he worked for Mitchell, Woodbury Co. for many years until that firm was taken over by Jones, McDuffee & Stratton, thus he again became employed by Theodore Jones. Both companies were importers of fine English cutlery and chinaware.
They lived at 32 Morris St, Everett, Mass. for many years. George's sister Bessie came to the U.S. ca 1900 and lived with George and Amelia. She was married at their home on Oct. 16, 1905 to John Thomas Dunston.
After my father was married in 1907, George & Amelia moved to ? Dorchester, ? So. Weymouth, before finally locating at 69 South St., Randolph, Mass, where they resided until their deaths. Their house in Randolph has since been torn down and a new home built on the site.
I have his citizenship certificate, dated 24 March 1888 at the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts at Boston, for George Beake of Weymouth, a porter born in London, England. Various voter registration stamps are affixed: Weymouth 26 Oct 1888; Everett 16 Sep 1893; Weymouth 18 Oct 1912; Boston 4 Sep 1918, and Randolph 26 Feb 1923 (all in Massachusetts).
I have George's Bible, and in the front cover it says: Presented to George Beake By B.S.S., Continental Mines, May 20th, 1874.
Worked for Jones, McDuffee & Stratton, Boston MA (fine china importers) starting in May 1874 (sic),,
In 1880 U.S. Census: George Beeke, single white male, age 26, born in England, parents born in England, a Coachman in the household of Nelson Sherwood, age 67, a marble importer, Middletown, Richmond [Staten Island], New York City-Greater, New York. FHL Film 1254923. NA film number T9-0923, Page 218D.
Birth certificate of his son George James gives his residence as Brookline; occupation: clerk.
Died at 124 S. Franklin Street, Holbrook MA. "Funeral services at the Eastman Funeral Home, 896 Beacon St, Boston, Wednesday, March 11 at 2 P M."
