Note: Marriage registered as Clara Beake, June 1873 at Devizes [GRO Index 5a:211]. According to Jon Davis, Clara and William came to the U.S. for their honeymoon, ran out of money, and couldn't go home. Clara lived at 99 William Street for maybe a year after her husband died in 1926, then disappeared from the Stoneham listings until 1 Jan 1930, when she is listed as one of the first residents in the "Home for the Aged" [now Fuller House] at 32 Franklin Street. From a newspaper clipping, apparently from "The Observant Citizen", 18 May 1948: "Best wishes to Mrs. Clara Douse of Stoneham who will be 97 today. Mrs. Douse, who is now Stoneham's second oldest woman, was born in Wiltshire, England, came to America on her honeymoon, arriving in Boston on the Fourth of July in 1874." Another clipping states: "Mrs. Clara L. Douse of 32 Franklin Street observed her 97th birthday on Tuesday, May 18th. Mrs. Douse is believed to be the second oldest person in town Mrs. Douse is the only remaining member of the first group of women who came to the Home for Aged People when it was opened. " [The home is a lovely old Victorian building, still in existence on Franklin Street in Stoneham, Middlesex, Massachusetts.] She died of cerebral thrombosis.
