Notes
a. Note:   From D. Hamilton Hurd, comp., History of Middlesex County, Massashusetts, ..., Vol. III (Philadelphia: J.W. Lewis & Co., 1890), 315-316: "Captain Marsh, as hosts usually called him, was born March 7, 1805, in Exeter, N.H., where he obtained the title as captain of a militia company. There he learned, and in various places practised the trade of shoemaking. He resided successively in Amesbury, Lynn, and Boston, but in 1853 he removed to Waltham, his home for several years. ... For nearly twenty years he was in the Boston Custom-house in various positions. In 1655-56 he was State Treasurer of Massachusetts. ...In 1857 Mr. Marsh took an active part in the political life of Kansas... While in Kansas he acted for part of the time as adjutant general. Shortly after his return he was appointed Superintendant of the State Almshouse in Tewksbury. This was in early summer of 1858. ...After leaving Tewksbury Capt. Marsh returned to his native town, Exeter, N.H., where, after a brief period of repose, he died February 27, 1888, aged almost 83 years."
Death record of daughter Helen gives his birthplace as Exeter [Rockingham] NH. Death Certificate of his daughter Mary Frances gives his birthplace as Brentwood [Rockingham] NH. Records are being investigated there.
Marriage recorded at Exeter, 30 March 1826 as Thomas J. Marsh and Nancy S. Davis. This appears to be a double wedding with their siblings, as the line above records the marriage of Samuel H. Marsh and Martha B. Davis on the same date.
The 1880 US Census revealed the fascinating information that he was aged 75, and the Superintendent of the Tewksbury AlmsHouse, Tewksbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts. His household consisted of several members of his family [though not daughters Mary F. or Catherine Lucy, who were married by then], various staff of the Almshouse, and several hundred patients and paupers. Histories of the Almshouse on the internet offer the information that he was Superintendent from 1858 until 1883. In 1883 there was an inquiry into alleged abuses there, and I have so far found conflicting testimony - some indicating that he, his family, and staff were outstandingly good and caring, and others giving a long report on the alleged shortcomings of the institution and its management. This is quite a revelation, and one that I will pursue further.

Death recorded at Exeter as Thomas J. Marsh, married, died 27 Feb 1888, at Exeter, aged 82, son of Saml B Marsh and Mary A Willey. [New Hampshire, Death and Burial Records Index, 1654-1949]
