Note: I have a strong suspicion that Michael Maslen was also the father of Clara Lavinia Miles, and married her mother after her birth. There are many other instances in this family tree of the marriage taking place a year or more after the birth of the first child. I researched the Wiltshire Bastardy Bonds at the Wiltshire & Swindon Record Office in April 2006, to see if Jane had named anyone as the father of her illegitimate child, but there was nothing in the records. Since Michael was barely 18 when Clara was born, it is quite possible they were not given permission to marry sooner. When they did marry, it was by banns, not by special license. I would be interested in any clues anyone can contribute to the solution of this mystery.
