Notes
a. Note:   Marriage recorded at Holbrook as Charles Derby White of Holbrook, 22, Machine Operator, born E. Randolph, son of Samuel L. & Eliza W. (Derby), and Mary Lizzie Whitcomb of Holbrook, 21, born at Quincy, daughter of Jacob H. & Augusta E. (White), first marriage for both, 15 Oct 1876, by Geo. W. Blagdon, Clergyman, Boston.
Newspaper clipping [undated, paper unknown]: "50th Wedding Anniversary is Observed. Wollastonians Recall Big Snow Storm on Wedding Day. A snowstorm on the morning of their wedding, Oct. 15, 1876, was a feature of the occasion recalled by Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. White of 222 Arlington Street, Wollaston, who recently observed the 50th anniversary of the day. Friends from Quincy, Wollaston and neighboring towns called at their home and were received informally by the happy couple. They received many gifts including several gold pieces, flowers, and miscellaneous articles.
During the evening they were recipients of messages of congratulations, including a cablegram from Mr. and Mrs. L. A. White of Rome, Italy, the former a brother of Mr. Whites, and a telegram from another brother, S. A. White of Riverside, California.
The house was decorated with a profusion of cut flowers and plants, sent by friends and relatives of the couple. Of interest was a basket of American Beauty roses, a gift from J. E. A. Stuart, of the Boston Blacking company, with whom Mr. White has been affiliated for the past 23 years. Fellow employees sent 50 pink carnations with their felicitations and best wishes for many happy returns of the day.
Vocal and instrumental music was enjoyed, and a collation was served by the hostess. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. White's sons and daughters: Miss Carrie White, who makes her home with her parents, Mrs. Fred D. Caswell of Holbrook, Mrs. Julia[n] Weston and Carleton White of Waverly and Fred White of Quincy. Seven grandchildren were also present.
Mr. and Mrs. White have lived in Wollaston for 23 years and have made their home on Arlington Street for 10 years. They were married at the Winthrop Church of Randolph by Rev. Dr. Blagdon, pastor of the church, at the conclusion of a Sunday afternoon service, the ceremony coming as a surprise to the congregation.
In speaking about the snowstorm of 50 years ago, Mrs. White said that it was a severe one, clearing at noon, and that by sundown, owing to the drop in the temperature, icicles over a foot long were hanging from the rooftops."
I have a mirror that was a wedding gift to them, which is noted by both their son Carleton D. White, and his daughter Esther L. (White) Beake - my mother - as being the Burr family mirror. It was likely a wedding gift to his grandmother Meriel Burr, when she was married to Thomas White in 1808!
Occupation given as "Mechanic" in daughter Carrie Eliza's birth record. According to his granddaughter Esther [my mother], he lived with his daughter Carrie White for some time. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law Gertrude and Julian Weston in Wakefield ca 1929-1939, and raised chickens. His son Carleton visited to play cribbage on his way home from work at B.B. Chemical Co. in Middleton.
Death recorded at Wakefield as Charles Derby White of 25 Preston Street, Widower of Mary Lizzie (Whitcomb), died at home 1 Dec 1839 of bronchial pneumonia and coronary sclerosis, aged 85y 8m 22d, b. at Holbrook, s. of Samuel A. White, b. Holbrook, and Eliza W. Derby, b. Weymouth. Informant: Carleton White (son) of 42 Francesca St., Somerville. Buried at Union Cemetery, Holbrook, 4 Dec 1939. [Death Certificate, Wakefield, Reg. No. 198].
