Michael Wardrope, son of Sir William Wardrope, was born in Scotland andrecieved a royal grant from Queen Anne in King William Co VA in 1699. He was awarded an additional grant, for fighting against the Indians, in Amelia Co, in 1708, and had later grants in Amelia Co in 1712 and 1713. It is apparent that one of his sons was James Wardrope, who with Lawrence Washington and others of the VA gentry, organized the Ohio Land Co of VA, in 1748. Sallie Wardrope, wife of James Wardrope, is referred to in correspondence between George Washington (younger brother and heir of Lawrence Washington) and Sally (Cary) Fairfax, wife of George William Fairfax, of London and VA. George William Fairfax was a cousin of Thomas Lord Fairfax of VA and was among the backers of the Ohio Company.
It is generally agreed that Michael Wardrope was the ancestor of theWardropes of VA, including Luke Wardrope (Waldrop), below.
(Note: VA records indicate there may have been two Michael Wardropes; Michael Sr and Michael Jr, and that Michael Wardrope Sr, would be the immigrant ancestor, having received VA, land grants in the 1660's. Hisson, Michael Wardrope, Jr would then be the Indian fighter. [Ref. recordsof U V Waldrop of Tennessee].)
In 1699, Michael II received a land grant for 100 acres. In 1704, Fuller & Johnson assigned 90 acres to Michael II. On 26 Apr 1712, Micharel II was granted 100 acres in VA for trnsporting John Pomfrett and Tho. Hancock. Children of Michael II have not been dcumented but are indicated by circumstantial evidence.
Sarah is the only documented wife of Michael III. The wide range of birth dates imply that Michael married more than once. Possibly Michael had additional children whose names are not known.
