Notes
a. Note:   ehold of MARY MALISSA NEWELL in 1870 Township 8, Warren County, North Carolina, next to the white LEMUEL NEWELL family. The black NEWELLs were former slaves from Warren County. By 1880, this area was revealed as Fishing Creek Township, with MALISSA NEWELL (probably same person as MARY) and family still living next to the white LEMUEL A. NEWELL family, who was her former slaveowner where she had been among the slaves distributed to him on December 24, 1852 from the estate of NANCY S. (CHEEK) NEWELL, the grandmother of LEMUEL, the child of her deceased son, WILLIAM P. NEWELL and his wife MARY A.T. POWELL. NANCY had been the wife of DAVID HYDE NEWELL, who had died in 1821 and had left the distribution of his slaves to their children upon her death.
MELISSA NEWELL's children were fathered by LEMUEL A. NEWELL as revealed in their various Marriage and Death records showing him as being their father. CORENNA was the sister of PRUDIE NEWELL, who married LEWIS WEST, and also of KATIE NEWELL, who was the 2nd wife of LEWIS WEST.
(See wills & slave distributions of the NEWELL Slaves here:

Also among the slaves distributed at the same time as MALISSA, was DANIEL, who was my ancestor through his daughter PEGGY NEWELL; I don't know if MALISSA and DANIEL were related, but it is possible that they may have been cousins, at the very least.
