  10/13/2015:
 I suspect that the father of JOHN HAYWOOD CAUDLE and RALEIGH CAUDLE, WILLIAM RICHARD CAUDLE, was a white man, who had children with a Free Woman of Color, whose name was RHODA, whose last name could have been anything; this would explain why no record can be found of JOHN HAYWOOD and RALEIGH CAUDLE, they more than likely had their mother's surname prior to JOHN's marriage, and only started using the CAUDLE surname when they came of age themselves. There were white CAUDLE families who lived in Granville County by the mid-1800s, who later moved to Wilkes County, NC, and it is very possible that one was the RICHARD CAUDLE who fathered the 2 CAUDLE men who were People of Color.

 I have begun to wonder if this may have been HAYWOOD CLEATON. Although he was using the name of CORDLE/CAUDLE by 1850, his age seems to match that of CLEATON, who I have not been able to locate anywhere else, while there is no record of JOHN HAYWOOD CAUDLE prior to 1850.

 =====================
 John H. CAUDLE apparently had at least one child with his wife's niece, LUCY TONEY, the child being RHODA TONEY, sometimes called RHODA CAUDLE.
 =====================
 The bondsman for JOHN H. CAUDLE's marriage to MARY P. EVANS was ALLEN WRIGHT; he was a free person of color, b. 1820, who was married to NANCY HUGHES on Nov. 6, 1837 Warren Co., bondsman, WOODSON HUGHES. In 1850, they lived Warrenton, Warren Co., Image 6, H/H #321/321, listed as a Ditcher, both he & NANCY were born in VA, living next to JOICY HUGHES, age 70, with WOODSON & PARTHENA HUGHES (ages 49 & 48), several doors away, also showing born in VA. ALLEN WRIGHT shows getting married again to MARIA MITCHELL, on June 21, 1860 Warren Co., Bondsman, STEPHEN HEDGEPETH. Right now, I'm not sure how all of this connects, but I'm keeping these in mind in trying to find out further info on the origins of my CAUDLE family.

 The only other Free CAUDLE at the time was GREEN CAUDLE/CORDLE, b. 1817, who first shows up in Orange County, NC in 1850. He was listed as a cabinet maker, but it turns out he was a former slave, who must have been given his freedom around 1850 because I found his Orange County Cohabitation Marriage Record dated 1866 where it is stated that he and his wife, MARY ANN, were lately slaves, now emancipated, had married in 1840. While GREEN was in the Census from 1850 - 1870, his wife and children only first appeared in 1870, so everyone except him must have been slaves up until the 1865 end of the Civil War. I have found no connection between this family and that of the Warren County Free People of Color CAUDLEs.
