Note: th many other black families, on the land of "BALDY" & CAROLINE DAVIS. This was probably ARCHIBALD H. DAVIS, shown born about 1833, in North Carolina, in the 1870 census. Although JAMES DAVIS shown as JAMES POWELL in 1900, indicates his birthdate as Feb.1842, the previous census records point to his birthdate as being about 1839, which is the date I have applied to him. I believe that the "T" in JAMES name in 1880, may have been for "TRIP" since that was a nickname that ran through the DAVIS family in the early days, possibly after him. =================================================== Now have proof that there were more family members that I didn't know about: Abstracts of Wills, Warren County, North Carolina (GoldenWest Marketing Genealogy,5812 Temple City Blvd,Temple City,CA 91780-2112), 1845 -1902; #138 . SUMNER DAVIS - 14 July 1898 - Sept. Ct 1898 - WB 51/509 Wife: MARY - 25 acres of land, containing the house, for her lifetime, and at her death to my grandson EDDIE GREEN. Residue of land, being 49 acres, to my grandson EDDIE GREEN. If the said EDDIE should die without heir, I give the 74 acres, at my wife's death, to be divided between my brothers JAMES T. DAVIS, THOM (THEM?) DAVIS, and JERRY DAVIS. Ex. Brother JAMES T. DAVIS Wit> M. T. DUKE, S.R. DUKE, JERRY ALSTON (Probate indicates the estate included 73 acres of land. Heirs were the widow MARY DAVIS, EDDIE GREEN, JERRY DAVIS (alias FOOTE), GARFIELD DAVIS, HENRY DAVIS, BEN DAVIS and ALICE DOWTIN (wife of ED DOWTIN). ==================================================== 5/22/2010 THEODORE "TRIP" DAVIS and his children were former slaves of PETER R. POLLY KEARNEY (sister of PETER R. DAVIS): SUMMER - Valued at $800 ESTHER - Valued at $200 JIM - Valued at $400 MARY POLLY DAVIS was married to EDWARD KEARNEY on June 5, 1815 in Warren Co.,NC. EDWARD KEARNEY's will, probated May 1868, made no mention of his wife, so I assume she was dead by that time. Their children named in his will were HENDERSON KEARNEY & JANE HOOPER, not mentioned was daughter AMANDA, who had married SAMUEL DAVIS on March 11, 1847 Warren Co., although SAMUEL was mentioned as being EDWARD's son-in-law. Of interest is that SAMUEL DAVIS (son of BURWELL DAVIS) was living next door to my other ancester, LOUIS DAVIS, b. 1827, family in 1880. -------- Further research on the slaveowners family shows that PETER R. DAVIS was the son of MATTHEW T. DAVIS & MARY MADDRAY-DAVIS, and that the widow MARY DAVIS received a number of slaves upon her husband's death in 1827, namely GEORGE, SEALEY, EASTER, ISHAM, TEMPERANCE, & REAMUS, it's very possible that EASTER was ESTHER, especially since that was what she was called on JAMES DAVIS marriage license. MATTHEW T. DAVIS was the son of PETER DAVIS (d. 1804) & HANNAH TURNER (d. 1826) DAVIS, all of these families were of Warren County, North Carolina. (see file of THEODORE TRIP DAVIS for more complete details on slaveowners of all members of the family) ====================================== SUMMER DAVIS INVENTORY, 1904 Warren County, North Carolina Accounts 1891-1914 Pg. 226 The following is an inventory of the personal property belonging to the Estate of SUMNER DAVIS, deceased, late of Warren County, which has come into my hands as the Administrator, a.b.n.c.t.a, of said SUMNER DAVIS, deceased. Sworn to and subscribed Before me this 15th day of August 1904. J. R. RODWELL D.C.S.C. (See the file of SUMNER DAVIS for more details on the specifics of his will and estate) ======= NOTES by Deloris Williams. James Trip Davis, Jerry Davis (a.k.a. Jerry Foote) & Thomas Davis Sr. were the brothers of Sumner Davis, who died July 14, 1898. In Sumner’s will, he left his property to his wife, Mary, his grandson, Eddie Green, and his 3 brothers. Thomas Davis Sr. died in August 1898, and his heirs were his surviving children Henry, Ann, William, Alice, Simon Trip, Benjamin, Thomas and Garfield Davis. James Trip Davis died between February & October 1902, and his son, Robert Y. Davis, took over the administration of the Estate of Sumner Davis. On August 15, 1904, Robert Y. Davis, received $128.46 from the Estate of Sumner Davis, and on August 17, 1904, Robert Y. Davis purchased back the 73 acres of land that had been sold to W. G. Egerton in 1902 from the Estate of Sumner Davis. That 73 acres was among the property that Robert Y. Davis left to his own heirs when he died in 1938.
