Note: ROBERT Y. DAVIS was probably the child originally known as "SAMUEL DAVIS" when he was born. Robert Davis was a well known figure in the black community in Warren County. He apparently was very intelligent and had many dealings with the white landowners in expanding his holdings. There were land transactions for the purchase of land in Marmaduke, a section of Fishing Creek Township, which he purchased from the Duke family who were well- to- do landowners and some of the founding fathers of Warren County. Robert died in 1938 of heart complications, and upon the urging of his sister, ENOLIA DAVIS, when it was apparent that he probably would not recover, he wrote a will dividing up his property among his children. . ROBERT Y. DAVIS started out working as a farm laborer in the cotton and tobacco fields around Warren County, and later became the owner of a successful sawmill in the area. With the money he was earning as a laborer, he attended North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro, where he learned not only the practical agriculture and mechanic arts which were part of the curriculum, but also became skilled in business and mathematics that enabled him to become a prominent businessman in and around Warrenton. He managed to buy and sell several properties in Warren County and among them was the land he bought in the Marmaduke community that became his family homeplace. Around 1910, he built the Little Zion Baptist Church across from his home and it became the family church and cemetery, where many generations of Davis family members are now buried, including Robert Y. Davis himself. =================================== From copy of Property Tax Records due- (held by Connie Davis) LAND TRANSACTIONS: Tract No. 1 - 73 Acres - ROBERT Y. DAVIS from W. G.
