Note: D & NANCY MITCHELL. In the 1860 Census, BENJAMIN says that he was born in Halifax County, and that was where CATO was living at the time of BEN's birth. CATO COPELAND was also the only Free Colored Person living in Halifax or Warren County during that time period, in fact, there was only one Free COPELAND family living in either one of those counties until 1850, when BENJAMIN showed up in Warren County, and HEZAKIAH and JOEL COPELAND (was he JOSEPH? not sure because the family members don't match) showed in Halifax County. I am now of the opinion that MARTHA COPELAND, who was probably the female living in CATO's 1820 household, was the mother of JOSEPH, BEN, ROBERT, and HESAKIAH COPELAND. MARTHA was apparently unmarried when she had her first few children, and they would have been removed and bonded out early, which is where I believe her sons were by 1830, except 1, which would have been either HEZAKIAH or ROBERT. According to the DNA Results of Wayman Copeland, a direct descendant of JOSEPH COPELAND, his ancestor was a member of the TINKER family. He took the 37 point test and was a close match to the TINKER surname, which is quite interesting because it goes to my theory that BENJAMIN & JOSEPH COPELAND were connected to CATO COPELAND through a female lineage, rather than a male one. CATO was first in the 1790 census in Craven County, NC, although it is known that he was in Halifax prior to that because of his 1778 marriage record, perhaps Craven was where his wife, NANCY, was living during those first few census years since CATO is shown as living alone until 1810. It is possible that their daughter, MARTHA COPELAND, was also living there for a long time, too, becasue interestingly enough, the TINKER surname only shows up in 1 family in Burke Co.,NC, and 2 -3 in Craven Co. In the 1790 Craven County census there were STEPHEN, EDWARD & EUPHEMY TINKER (widow of HARRIS TINKER). All of this may someday be used to prove exactly what the ancestry of our COPELAND lineage is and I certainly hope to be around for that. =================================== Notes added 3/28/2016 - DNA of JOSEPH COPELAND Something I had completely forgotten to add for which analysis was done some years ago, and confirmed with the more recent additions on the COPELAND DNA PROJECT, which were transferred from the old Y-Search website previously only open to members. Wayman Copeland, a direct descendant from JOSEPH COPELAND (1810- 1868) did the 67 marker Y-DNA test back in 2008, and his haplogroup is shown to be shown what is currently known as E-M2 (formerly E1b1a), which are the predominant lineage in Western Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, and the southern parts of Eastern Africa. JOSEPH is from the line of CATO COPELAND, which means that the Halifax County COPELANDs were of African descent, and whoever the father of JOSEPH COPELAND was he was not a white TINKER. Note: It is my belief that at least one of BENJAMIN COPELAND's parents was a child of CATO COPELAN
