Notes
a. Note:   M E. WEST in 1860, while their parents, MATTHEW & HARRIET WEST, were not in the census. I have no idea what may have been happening then.
ELIZABETH, known as LIZZIE, WEST disappears from the records after the 1900 Census and I think she died. Her children were split up and living elsewhere in 1910, and I believe that daughter, ANNIE COPELAND, was adopted by LIZZIE's son, HAWKINS CARTER, and took the name of ANNIE CARTER. Both ANNIE and WALTER (listed as COPELAND CARTER) were living with HAWKINS CARTER in 1910, which is even more of an indication that she had died.
 (August 16, 2013)
Proof of her death found in an entry in the Diary of Christopher N. Riggan, on the NCGenWeb Warren County website; he was apparently a traveling minister who had kept a diary of his day to day activities, many of them include a brief mention of deaths & marriages.
Note:   For some reason, MATTHEW, JOHN and ELIZABETH/BETTIE WEST were living with their Uncle WILLIA
