Note: 0, JAMES' family was enumerated as POWELL, for some reason or other, and TRIP was living with them. In checking earlier records, THEODORE lived within a couple of houses from JAMES and his family, and seems to have possibly been enumerated as ANDERSON DAVIS, in 1880. Because I am still investigating that and am not quite sure, I have not put it in my Sources Records, but here is what I found: 1880 Warren County,NC,Fishing Creek, Dist 287,Image 20, #203/203: ANDERSON DAVIS - B - 65 - NC NC NC - FARMER MANERVA DAVIS - B - 55 - NC NC NC - KEEPING HOUSE ANDERSON DAVIS - B - 14 - NC NC NC - LABORER ----------------------- There also was a younger THEODORE DAVIS, born 1830, possibly listed as THOMAS DAVIS in 1880, who lived Warren County a few doors down from THEODORE "TRIP" DAVIS. I believe he was another son of this THEODORE, not only because of location but because he also had a son nicknamed, TRIP. --------------------- 5/22/2010 THEODORE "TRIP" DAVIS and his children were former slaves of PETER R. DAVIS, of Warren County who died in 1850. The following are records from the Estate of PETER R. DAVIS, along with brief entries from records concerning the P. R. DAVIS' family, including his parents, grandparents, and his siblings who were the benefiaries of his estate. Confirmed these relationships and ages from the Estate Records of PETER R. DAVIS, May Court 1850. State Archives CR.100.508, Warren County Will Book 41. List of Negroes and their ages, as well as known on the 1st of January 1850 belonging to PETER R. White Clk ---- In Will Book 41, Pg. 90-91: In obedience to an order of Court for Warren County made at the November Term 1850, we the undersigned commissioners met on Monday the 16th day of December and proceeded to divide the negroes belonging to the Estate of Peter R. Davis deceased as follows (viz): Among the slaves who went to the following: Lot No.1 to MRS. ELIZABETH PITCHFORD's 4 children (PETER's sister ELIZABETH, whose husband, STERLING PITCHFORD, died in 1822): JERRY - Valued at $650 ELIZABETH DAVIS-PITCHFORD, was born 1789/died 1875. The PITCHFORD children were THOMAS JEFFERSON PITCHFORD (1810-1883); REBECCA DAVIS PITCHFORD (1812-1900); NANCY DAWSON PITCHFORD (1815-1900); MARY TURNER PITCHFORD (1819-1889). JERRY must have gone to the family of NANCY D. PITCHFORD, who was married to HENRY FOOTE JR. in 1832, that is probably why he sometimes adopted using the FOOTE surname. ----------- Lot No. 2 to JOHN B. POWELL (husband of PETER's sister NANCY): TRIPPE - Valued at $350 JOHN B. POWELL married NANCY DAVIS on Feb. 14, 1804 Warren Co.,NC. In his Warren Co. will probated May Court 1858, he mentions that the slaves he received from PETER R. DAVIS were to be divided up between his 3 children WILLIAM MORGAN POWELL (mar: EMILY KEARNEY), PETER D. POWELL (mar: ELIZABETH WHITMELL WILLIAMS) & MARY A. T. NEWELL (wife of WILLIAM P. NEWELL) ; he also gave his daughter, MARY, a slave named EMMA, I don't know if she could have been EMMA CLANTON who married JAMES T. DAVIS. ---------------- Lot No. 3 to DR. STEVEN/STEPHEN DAVIS (brother of PETER): TOM - Valued at $800 STEPHEN DAVIS married SALLY E. JOHNSTON on Feb. 23, 1815 Warren Co.,NC. STEPHEN DAVIS (1786- 1857) his will probated Nov. 1857 gives 50 slaves and his land near Shocco to his son PETER R. DAVIS, who was married to CATHERINE WHITE on Nov. 5, 1839 in Warren Co. his daughters SARAH AMIS & MARY EATON were dead by that time, and son HUGH J. DAVIS didn't receive any slaves, only land and other property. JAMES W. EATON, probably his son-in-law, was allowed to keep a number of slaves that he had taken from Granville to Arkansas. -------------------- Lot No. 4 to the children of MRS. POLLY KEARNEY (sister of PETER R. DAVIS): SUMMER - Valued at $800 ESTHER - Valued at $200 JIM - Valued at $400 MARY POLLY DAVIS was married to EDWARD KEARNEY on June 5, 1815 in Warren Co.,NC. EDWARD KEARNEY's will, probated May 1868, made no mention of his wife, so I assume she was dead by that time. Their children named in his will were HENDERSON KEARNEY & JANE HOOPER, not mentioned was daughter AMANDA, who had married SAMUEL DAVIS on March 11, 1847 Warren Co., although SAMUEL was mentioned as being EDWARD's son-in-law. Of interest is that SAMUEL DAVIS (son of BURWELL DAVIS) was living next door to my LOUIS DAVIS, b. 1827, family in 1880. ---------------- Further research on the slaveowners family shows that PETER R. DAVIS was the son of MATTHEW T. DAVIS & MARY MADDRAY-DAVIS, and that the widow MARY DAVIS received a number of slaves upon her husband's death in 1827, namely GEORGE, SEALEY, EASTER, ISHAM, TEMPERANCE, & REAMUS, it's very possible that EASTER was ESTHER, especially since that was what she was called on JAMES DAVIS marriage license. MATTHEW T. DAVIS was the son of PETER DAVIS (d. 1804) & AMY _____?; his 2nd wife was HANNAH TURNER (d. 1826) DAVIS, all of these families were of Warren County, North Carolina. PETER DAVIS, d. 1804, received the following slaves from his father-in-law, THOMAS TURNER (WB 5/36, will dated April 30, 1788, probated Nov. 1788 Warren Co.,NC): EASTER, DRURY, DAVY, FEREBERRY & ARTHUR; the will specified that the slaves were to revert to the children of HANNAH (TURNER) DAVIS upon her death, and according to noted researcher Forrest King, they were PETER DAVIS' first slaves. It is very possible that these slaves were my ancestors. (Forrest King's DAVIS & DUKE Family History is here: http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncwarren/fam-hist/families/davis-duke.htm )
Note: THEODORE DAVIS, a.k.a. TRIP DAVIS, appears to have been the father of JAMES T. DAVIS. In 190
