Note: p, North Carolina; they were married on Sept. 11, 1880 Warren Co.,NC. MASON DAVIS's death certificate says he was the son of MASON DOWTIN & LUCINDA DAVIS, however, in a collection of letters written by REBECCA PITCHFORD- DAVIS (1812-1900), wife of EDWARD DAVIS (1806-1895) during the Civil War, put together by her granddaughter, BLANCHE EGERTON BAKER, MASON's parents were RICHMOND, who belonged to a neighbor, and LUCINDA, a slave of EDWARD DAVIS; they were known by the slaveowners family as "UNCLE RICHMOND" and "MAMMY CINDY". The Letters also state that MASON went off to the War with GEORGE DAVIS (1835-1909), a son of EDWARD DAVIS; it was fairly common for one of the slaves or sometimes, a Free Man of Color, to accompany their white masters or neighbors to the War, to serve as cooks or attendants.
