Note: ren County North Carolina, then to the W. K. KEARNEY family as found in his 1829 slave book. WILLIAM ALSTON left the slaves SARAH, LETTUCE, LUCY and BOATSWAIN, to his wife MARTHA (HARDY) ALSTON in his will. MARTHA gave MELVY to her daughter's, MARIAH, children in 1823. W.K. KEARNEY married MARIAH ALSTON in July 1810, and in 1811, some additional slaves were distributed to the KEARNEY family from the Estate of WILLIAM ALSTON. By 1823, MELVY and her daughter, LUCY, b. 1820, were among the slaves in the Inventory of MARTHA (HARDY) ALSTON, who were to be distributed to the Children of WILLIAM K. KEARNEY and MARIAH ALSTON-KEARNEY. They were further distributed to WILLIAM and MARIAH's daughter, VIRGINIA V. KEARNEY, in the 1832 allotments to their specific children. And in 1841, when VIRGINIA married ROBERT E. WILLIAMS, MELVY and her children, HUBBARD, and DELIA, were among those who went with her to live with the new family. It is my suspicion, that the slave named LUCY, first listed in the 1795 will of WILLIAM ALSTON, may have been MELVY’s mother, since that was also the name of MELVY’s oldest child.
